A LETTER FROM THE STORY CONSULTANT

WHEN MY BEST FRIEND BRANDON SAID TO ME AT THE END OF 2017, “HEY, THERE’S A SCRIPT I WANT YOU TO READ,” I WAS PERPLEXED. WHY WOULD HE WANT MY OPINION ON A SCREENPLAY?

THEN I READ WHAT HE WROTE.

I TOLD HIM, “TRANS WOMEN ARE BEING MURDERED LEFT AND RIGHT IN TODAY’S SOCIETY. CAN WE SHOW THAT LIFE HAS BEATEN US UP, BUT WE SURVIVE AND GET A HAPPY ENDING?” THE FIRST TIME I READ KITTY, I CRIED. MY RESPONSE TO HIM WAS, “BISH! I JUST GOT DONE. DAMN, I’M ALL MESSED UP. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS MOVIE.” FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, I FELT SEEN BY SOMEONE.

WE WORKSHOPPED THE SCRIPT FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF, ADJUSTING BABY GIRL’S STORY AND OVERALL FEEL IN REGARDS TO A TRUE BLACK TRANSGENDER GIRL’S EXPERIENCE. THE FINAL VERSION WAS EVERYTHING I NEEDED AND MORE. EVERYTHING THAT THE CISGENDER-PRESENTING, HOMOSEXUAL TEEN VERSION OF ME WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO GO SEE WITH MY HETEROSEXUAL, TEEN GIRLFRIENDS.

I’M SO PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS PROJECT. AGAIN, IT’S NOT MY PERSONAL STORY, BUT SO MANY TRANSGENDER PEOPLE GET FIRED, KICKED OUT OF THEIR FAMILIES, AND END UP ON THE STREETS AS SEX WORKERS DUE TO A LACK OF EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND POSITIVE REPRESENTATION. THIS MOVIE WILL HELP CHANGE THOSE STEREOTYPES AND MOVE OPINIONS TOWARD UNDERSTANDING AND EMPATHY. I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS MOVIE.

THANK YOU TO MY FRIEND FOR CREATING THIS PIECE OF GOLD.

EMMY MORGAN, BLACK TRANS WOMAN, ACTIVIST & STORY CONSULTANT
